GEOCACHING

The Boy Scouts of America and Geocaching.com have partnered to provide 'Get in the Game!', a fast growing treasure hunting sport, to scouts and leaders across the country.

This popular, outdoor treasure-hunting game will showcase how Scouts use Global Positioning System receivers and other orienteering techniques. The skills learned can be a starting point in learning search and rescue criteria.

A brand new merit badge, Geocaching, is anticipated to be offered in the 2nd quarter of 2010.

Did you know that there were already over 50 geocaches hidden within 5 miles of Fayetteville, even before the BSA started hiding caches here?  You pass right by several every time you go into town without even noticing them!

There are many aspects to the game.  One is called "Adventure of Scouting".  Each district will be placing 10 traditional caches located in their district to spur unit recruitment. Our district, the David Crockett district, will soon have ten geocaches placed for you to find.  The David Crockett district is comprised of Lincoln, Giles, Lawrence, and Wayne counties.

Each cache will have a punch & a trading card designation (scuba, horseback riding, caving, etc.). If a scout / leader collects all punches on a scorecard, they are eligible for the Centennial Geocaching MTC patch (limited to the first 2,500 BSA registered cachers). Most districts’ Adventure of Scouting series will launch in early February.
