Jamboree City Rises Again

At dawn on July 26, 2010, dew on the empty fields shimmers in the growing daylight. And then … here they come!  By noon, throngs of Scouts are carrying gear and tents, and gateways begin to emerge from the empty ground. By dusk, the landscape has been transformed into a bustling city of 18,000 tents, 3,600 patrol kitchens and 43,000 Scouts and leaders. This transformation occurs in mere hours, making Jamboree City the fastest growing city in Virginia, if not the world.

The scouts listed below meet the age requirements (must be at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2010) to attend the 2010 National BSA Jamboree in one capacity or another:

Benton A (Eligible for a Youth Staff position ONLY)
Lansdon A (Youth Staff OR regular youth registration)
Chris R (Youth Staff OR regular youth registration)
Christopher W (Regular youth registration)
Evan S (Regular youth registration)
Ethan A (Regular youth registration)
Travis S (Regular youth registration)
Matthew C (Regular youth registration)
Calvin A  (Regular youth registration)
Daniel M (Regular youth registration)
Matthew M (Regular youth registration)
Bailey O (Regular youth registration)
Caleb B            (Regular youth registration)

bullet165 of the 232 youth slots available for the Middle TN Council are already filled (as of 6/9/09).  Don't wait too long.
bulletThe Jamboree dates are July 26th through August 4th 2010, but the busses depart Nashville July 22 for a prelude tour of Washington D.C.
bulletThe jamboree fee covers shelter, food, insurance, equipment, program material, transportation (from Nashville), tours, and prejamboree training.
bullet Regular Youth Registration cost is $1,610.00  Financial assistance is available (similar to Camperships).  The assistance amount has not yet been determined.
bullet Youth Staff Registration cost is $397.50.
bullet This is not a Troop funded activity.  Either parents will need to dig deep into their pockets, or scouts will need to work/fundraise over and above what is currently slated during the upcoming year (with troop approval).
bullet Adult Staff positions are available as well, however Troop 461 leaders are not required to attend.  Contingent Troops will be formed by the council office.
bulletThe 2010 National Scout Jamboree website is: http://www.bsajamboree.org/index.html.
bullet The last National Jamboree was in 2005. View a photo journal of the Middle TN Council contingent at http://www.mtcjambo2005.org.
bullet A $100 + $10 deposit is required to reserve a spot.  The initial $100 goes to the Council office registration page.  A separate $10 processing fee is paid thru http://MyScouting.org.  If you don't already have a MyScouting account set up, you may want to view this help file.

Why are some of the scout names above green?

Those scouts listed above which are shown in green have an additional opportunity to earn money to help pay their way to the Jamboree.  They will meet the minimum age requirement (15) to apply for a paid adult camp staff position at Boxwell summer camp 2010.  A 15 year old scout usually starts out around $90 per week.  A scout 16-17 might earn $110-$145 depending on there skill set.  The typical full staff salary ranges from $150 - $175 per week for BSA Councils across the US.  The Middle TN Council Staff Application is available here.

Now Imagine this...  If those scouts were to earn $90 times six weeks, that would total $540 toward the $1,600 Jamboree registration fee, leaving a balance of $1,060.  Perhaps $700 in financial assistance ultimately becomes available from the Council office.  That leaves only $360 left for parents to come up with.  Maybe, just maybe, the troop would allocate the $165 (earmarked for Boxwell) from the fall fairground fundraiser?  Now the total out of pocket expense for those parents would be $195.  Now consider the $200 in food expense you'll save at home while your son is out having the scouting adventure of a lifetime for 8 weeks.  You could end up making a PROFIT of $5 on the deal!!!

Those of you who might seriously consider sending your son might want to contact the Middle TN Contingent Leader for specifics: Anthony Golden (anthonygolden@gnomewebs.com).
