2.  This next group may be appealing to you because they can be done from the comfort of your home.

Newsletter writer – Write a newsletter and email out.  Contents – could be things like meeting times/changes, upcoming events & activities, recognize scouts for achievements, reminders, etc.  It doesn’t really need to be a fancy layout or anything like that.  Just a simple informational email to troop parents will suffice.

PHONE CALLER – No, we’re not talking about telemarketing.  Imagine this scenario…  The Scoutmaster is on his way back to Fayetteville with 20 scouts after a weekend camping trip.  Tired and Exhausted from the rugged adventure, he fumbles through his cell phone contact list as he drives down the road because he needs to call all of the parents to let them know the troop will be arriving at Walmart at around 2:30.  Scenario #2 would be that he makes just one phone call to you, and then you call the remaining parents.

PUBLICITY GURU – This would involve writing the occasional radio public service announcement or newspaper article if you have the skills.  Templates are available to get you started.

DATA ENTRY – We might purchase software called Troopmaster to maintain our troop records.  If you could type in data for us, that would be a big help.  The Troopmaster software will let different people handle the data entry for the various sections, so you don’t have to tackle the whole thing by yourself.  You could, for example, type in info for one or more of the following areas: 1. Add contact info when a new scout joins the troop. 2. Enter Merit Badge work completed by scouts.  3. Indicate when a scout advances in rank.  4. Maintain records of scout activities and attendance.

RANK ADVANCEMENT DATA ENTRY – When scouts advance in rank and earn merit badges, we need to update their records with the Council office.  This can be done either by mailing in paper forms, or entering the data into an online form and submitting the data electronically.  This needs to be done maybe 3-4 times a year.  The Troopmaster software mentioned above is another possible way to handle this task.

RECHARTER DATA ENTRY – Like the rank advancement described above, this can be done with paper forms or electronically online.  A handy tutorial is provided to walk you through the process step by step (the actual online form is not available for anyone to see until 2 months prior to recharter date).  Basically, you verify that the current list of registered scouts and adults is correct, deleting or adding names if needed.  Then print the forms and send them to a meeting.  This is done once a year in October.

PHILANTHROPIST– To busy to volunteer?  Consider giving (or obtaining from others) a financial contribution as an alternative choice.  $10 will buy a scout a handbook or pay his annual registration fee.  $25 buys a shirt.  $70 covers everything a young man needs to join scouting for his first year.  $165 sends a scout to Summer Camp.  $700 equals one high adventure base trip registration fee.  $1,600 sends a scout to the 2010 National Scout Jamboree in VA.  $32,000.00 sends the whole troop.  $95,000 should cover the 2011 World Jamboree in Sweden.  Tack så mycket.  Ja Ja. Make checks payable to Troop 461.
